I love the naming of this cafe. It used to be named something else, but they changed it a few years ago (different operator perhaps?) and it's now Cafe Valor. Appropriately named because it's located inside the War Memorial Veterans Building where Herbst Theatre is also located. Small cafe near the front of the entrance with a few seats inside and a few tables outside. A nice selection of sandwiches, pastries, can & bottle drinks, coffee/tea. Service is friendly. Located on Van Ness and McAllister, across the street from City Hall. Limited hours.

Great coffee shop near City Hall. Heads up- my laptop was stolen right off our table while I stood next to it last week. Be very cautious with your belongings here- especially laptops. It happened so suddenly right in the middle of a meeting. Hope you enjoy your coffee and pastries in peace :)

I love their hot cocoa and the strawberry smoothie . Even though the drinks are pricy , but they are good . I love their pastries and they are half price after 2:00pm . My favorite is the curry potatoes turnover . I love it.

Tried the curry potato turnover ($4). There was one single thinly sliced potato sliver, yellow curry paste, ricotta (?) cheese. IMO there wasn't enough filling. I didn't really like this. I also bought a guava and cream cheese pastry ($4). This one is pretty good and you must try it. I don't think there was enough guava.

Good coffee and their mushroom and cheese tart is ludicrously good. I mean mushrooms, cheese, and a whole stick of butter are likely to necessarily be good but I was still surprised at how excellent that damn tart was. Certainly not something you can, should, or should be able to afford to eat daily, but it is quite the treat.

This place is a hidden gem. Cool interior, friendly staff, great quality coffee n pastries. Hard to find as it's hidden in the war memorial building, but worth it

This used to be called Coffee + Milk which was a really nice coffee bar that served excellent chai tea lattes. I don't know if they changed anything else besides the name... The coffee is still good, and I swear the staff are still the same too. They don't do fancy latte art (at least on my chai tea latte), but who cares about that. They also honored my punch card from Coffee + Milk. The one improvement is the pastries. I don't remember Coffee + Milk having an abundance of food. I tried a fluffy pastry with cheese and bacon, and it was delicious and filling. Since it's across the street from City Hall, it gets packed during the morning and random times of the day as politicos meet "outside the building." There are a few tables and chairs inside but it's worth it to take a stroll around the War Memorial.

Stumbled across this coffee shop on my way to work and decided to pop in to check it out! It's located right near the entrance of the War Memorial. They brew Intelligentsia coffee and have a nice selections of milks (Oatly!!) and pastries (Neighbor Bakehouse!!). The baristas are very friendly. There isn't too much seating, I think maybe 5-6 high stool seats inside and two or three small round tables right outside the cafe (but inside the Memorial). Really lovely cafe and will definitely be back! I also saw a sign that said they have 50% off select pastries and coffee from 2-4pm (I believe they're only open weekdays).

Located right inside the War Memorial building. They have a variety of coffee beverages with the option of Soy, Almond, AND OATMILK (for a slight charge)!! Highly recommend oatmilk as a non-dairy alternative as it's almost as creamy as real dairy. Service is always super kind and they offer stamp cards for a free drink after 9. They also have pastries and sandwiches (but they're on the pricier side).

As I consumed their rich hot cocoa, I was transported back to simpler times when comfort food reigned supreme. The decadence of each sip was matched only by the delightful atmosphere of the café. It's a place where each pastry comes with a story—like the guava and cream cheese pastry, a delightful treat praised for its balance of flavors, albeit suggested to have a bit more filling in the guava department.

However, like any cherished cafe, it is wise to exercise caution with your belongings. A recent review indicates that the café's busy environment can sometimes lead to unforeseen incidents, so keeping a close watch is advised.

In summary, Café Valor is a small but mighty café that brings together a community of breakfast lovers and brunch aficionados. Whether it's the rich flavors of their signature dishes, the welcoming atmosphere, or the ideal location, this café truly embodies both valor and comfort. Become a part of its story and indulge in an experience that promises to warm your heart and fill your belly.
